Thai Massage vs Swedish Massage: Which is Right for You?
Two of the world’s most popular massage styles — Thai massage and Swedish massage — share the same goal of relaxation but use completely different approaches. Here’s how to choose the right one for your needs.
What is Thai Massage?
Thai massage (Nuad Bo-Rarn) is a 2,500-year-old healing art from Thailand. It combines acupressure, assisted stretching, and energy work along Sen lines. You stay fully clothed — no oil, no undressing. The therapist uses their hands, knees, legs, and feet to move your body through yoga-like postures while applying rhythmic pressure.
At Moonlight Spa in Gulshan 2, our Thai massage sessions last 60 or 90 minutes and are performed by therapists certified in authentic Wat Pho techniques.
What is Swedish Massage?
Swedish massage is the Western approach to massage, developed in the 19th century. It uses long, flowing strokes (effleurage), kneading (petrissage), friction, and percussion with oil or lotion applied directly to the skin. You undress to comfort level and are draped with towels for privacy.
Swedish massage focuses primarily on relaxation and surface-level muscle tension. It’s the most common massage type in Western spas.
